Webinar Session Description: Medical Errors, often a result of systemic problems, are a leading cause of death. Florida's Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) wants to ensure appropriate, efficient, effective, and quality care is not taken for granted. This 2-hour recorded webinar session will explore the types of medical errors, the systematic approach of a root cause analysis, disclosure or an error to the patient, strategies to reduce the risk of medical errors, and the reporting of medical errors to the appropriate agencies. This presentation will satisfy Florida's 2-hour requirement for Medical Errors in a session designed specifically for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
1. Define "medical error".
2. List the injuries resulting from an adverse event that must be reported to AHCA.
3. Describe interventions that may prevent common medical errors.
Speaker: Timother Kowalski, M.A., CCC-SLP is internationally known for his work with Asperger syndrome and related disorders. He is the author of eight books on the subject and received the 2010 FLASHA Clinician of the Year award. He was the 2011 FLASHA nominee for the ASHA Foundation's Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement. He hols the "TEAMS 2000 SLP of the YEar" award for his work with autism in the four-county Orlando area. He has served on the FLASHA board in previous years, and serves currently on the convention planning committee.
